THE WAR of HAFRON

by Connor Currie (Age 9)

CHAPTER1

It was late afternoon and Hafro, prince of the kingdom Hafron, was standing on the wall walk.  He watched the villagers pull carts and run around.  He saw chickens and sheep.  Farmers planted seeds and watered them. Then he saw three horsemen running to the castle then he walked back into the keep.  Hafro heard his father, King Akenoes, talking to Hafro’s friends Mira and Dane. Mira was the best archer in the land. Dane was the champion mace man.

“Your majesty,” said Dane, “Orcs have been sighted coming this way.

“They will be here in two days to attack by ship,”Mira added.

“Hmmmm,” said King Akenoes with a serious face. “Tell the farmers that if they see ships in the sea get into the castle.”

“Yes, Your Majesty,” said Dane and Mira. That night Hafro had an uneasy sleep.  He thought about the invasion.  Why would the orcs attack here and what do they want?  By afternoon the next day farmers had already started coming to the castle.  Dane was in the smithy purchasing a suit of chain mail.  Meanwhile Mira was purchasing arrows from the Fletcher.

“Orcs are slow. How come they take so long?” asked Dane.

“Be patient would you?” replied Mira.   “You’ll get your chance.”

“Stupid orcs” mumbled Dane.  That evening all the farmers had gotten in the castle and Hafro still had questions in his mind. The next morning soldiers were busy getting ready for battle that would take place the next day.

“Yessss” said Dane with a grin.  “Almost time”.

“Dane, you’re the strangest man I have ever met,” said Hafro.  Dane grinned and answered “Thank you”

“He’ll never learn,” sighed Mira.

“Indeed” added Hafro. In the afternoon warriors took their posts and an army left the castle to protect the coast when the orcs came and in the evening the orcs’ ships were arriving.  There were thousands and thousands of orc ships. From their view on the top of the highest hill, Mira and Dane were surprised to see so many ships.  They had never seen so many ships at once.  In the morning, the ships landed and orcs came pouring out of the ships.

“CHARGE!” screamed the orc leader.

“FIRE!” yelled Hafro.  Arrows flew from the army and hit the orc army with full force.  But the orc army kept coming. The two armies collided and the battle began.

“FINALLY!!!” screamed Dane as he slashed another orc with his mace. (If you were wondering Dane has been spoiling for a fight.)  Mira frowned, “Less talking more fighting, Dane.”

After 6 more hours of vicious fighting the Hafron’s leader ordered “RETREAT, RETREAT”.  “Darn” muttered Dane as they reached the Castle.  When they reached the Castle, Hafro searched the army for Dane and Mira until he found them. Hafro smiled ”Its great to know that you’re both alive”.

Mira smiled “Did you miss us”? “Indeed” replied Hafro. “Anything new? “ “Not much…but my father wants you, something about the war probably”.

“The king wants you,” said a royal guard of the throne room. When they entered the throne room the king yelled, “DONT GIVE UP SO EASILY!” Mira frowned ”but sir… “Send out another army” interrupted the king! “If they fight again I will lead them” said Hafro! “NO!!!” screamed the king, “NOT YOU!” There was a long moment of silence “All right… just…just take care”.

Meanwhile the orcs were getting annoyed. “When do we get to attack the castle”? Complained an orc who was very angry.

“We attack when the rest of the ships land, you nitwit!” Answered the orc leader.  “This is crazy”. The orc said. “Be quiet numbskull” said the very angry orc leader.”

“Make me,” Hissed the orc.

“With pleasure” said the orc leader. They both drew their swords and attacked. The fight lasted about three minutes. Then the orc leader swung his sword and chopped the others head off leaving a corpse. Blood flowed from the body and all over the ground. “That shows him whose boss,” Mumbled the orc leader.

CHAPTER 2

“Enemy army approaching!” yelled the orc scout suddenly. Orcs hurried here and there to get to their posts. Meanwhile Hafro, Mira, and Dane watched the orcs as they rode up on their horses. “Looks like we caught them off guard” said Hafro. Dane grinned “Good, they’re easier to kill that way”

“CHARGE!” Commanded Hafro. The Hafron army took off at the orc army.

Hafro swinging his sword and Dane wailing his mace while Mira shot her arrows. Dane fought like a wild man. Three hours later the orc leader ordered ”PULL BACK TO THE SHORE!”

 The orcs were retreating!

“BOOYAH!” said Dane with a smile.

“We have only won the battle, not the war Dane” said Hafro to Dane. “He’s right Dane,” agreed Mira as she picked up her arrows.

“Why do you always take his side?” said Dane on the way back to the castle. Then a royal guard came to them and said ”The King wants you.” When they got to the king asked ”What happened?”

“Your Majesty we…”

“My king we’re about to be attacked by the orcs!” A scout interrupted Mira before she could finish her sentence. “WHAT?” screamed the king as he dashed outside to see. The orcs had surrounded the castle! The army was lined with Catapults and siege towers pushed by trolls! And to top it off there was a scorpion shaped battering ram! “GENERAL” commanded the king.

 “Yes sir” said the general.

“Get the warriors ready…NOW!” said the king.

When Dane, Hafro, and Mira got to the wall they saw there were even more orcs then they thought! Then the orcs started to hit the bottom of their spears on the ground. “ARCHERS READY ARROWS” Cried Hafro ”FIRE” Arrows flew from the castle walls and rained upon the orc army. “FIRE CATUPULTS!” commanded the orc leader. Boulders flew from the army and hit the castle knocking down towers and parts of the wall.

“CHARGE” cried the orc leader and then the orcs took off at the castle. AND THE BATTLE WAS ON! “Keep on shooting.” Ordered Hafro.

“Climb the walls with siege towers and bring forth the battering ram!” Ordered the orc leader. Then the trolls started pushing the orc filled siege towers forward. Then giant rhinos pulled the battering ram while the trolls pushed it. “RAH RAH RAH RAH” chatted the orc army. “Oh great” mumbled Hafro. “Be on your guard.” “Keep shooting.” “Protect your home city.”

Then a drawbridge of one of the siege towers fell on the wall and orcs came pouring out of it and on the castle walls. Then another, then another, they were coming and drooping their drawbridges at a very high speed. Men and orcs drooped dead everywhere you looked. Hafro ducked from an orc club. Then he found a knife on the ground, he picked it up, and then he plunged it into the orcs stomach. “AHHHHHHHHHHHH!” Screamed the orc in pain.

It wobbled a bit, dropped its weapon, and then fell down dead with the other lifeless bodies. “There’s going to be a lot of cleaning up to do after this.” Said Dane. “Aye, there is.” Agreed Mira “Oh no” said Hafro ”TO THE GATE!” “Why?” asked Mira “That.” Answered Hafro. Dane and Mira looked where Hafro pointed and saw that the battering ram was almost to the gate!

“Oh, that” said Dane. Then they hurried through the huge crowds of soldiers to get to the gate. When they got there soldiers were already trying to brace the gate from the very hard-hitting battering ram. Then, suddenly the Gate burst open sending pieces everywhere and orcs came slashing and hacking their way into the soldiers of Hafron.

“ARCHERS RELEASE ARROWS” shouted Hafro. All at once, the archers fired their arrows (including Mira) and watched them shower here and there on the orcs. The orc leader was getting furious.

“SEND IN THE TROLLS NOW!!” He screamed at the other orcs.  Then giant trolls came squishing, smashing, and splating their way in! “WHOA” said Hafron as he dodged a troll’s mace. He ran to a bucket of hot coals, picked it up, and tossed it at the troll’s eyes, burning them.

“YYYYAAAAAAHHH” screamed the troll. Then Hafro picked up a spear and threw it at the troll. It landed right in the troll’s stomach and then the troll toppled backwards onto the ground onto anything behind it. Then something very strange happened. “RETREAT!” cried the orc leader.

“What in the world is going on?” asked Mira. “Why would they retreat?”

“I don’t know and I don’t care.” Answered Dane.

“Men, start cleaning it all up.” Demanded Hafro. “I still don’t get why they retreated.”

“I say we send out scouts.”

“Prince, there’s someone at the gate who wants to see you,” said a soldier. “He wants to see you right now.”

CHAPTER 3

“Well let him in,” said Hafro.

“Yes sir,” said the guard.  The gates opened and a man walked into to the castle. He was tall, had short blonde hair, two scabbards strapped to his back, and one on each side of his hip.

“ Hello” Said Mira “Welcome to Hafron, right guys?”

“Indeed” answered Dane.

“Name” said Hafro

“Sacris” answered the stranger” I have come to see the prince of Hafron. What are your names?”

“Mira” answered Mira.

“Dane”

“Hafro, prince of Hafron” said Hafro.

“It pleases me to meet you. I would like to have a word with you, away from these peasants” Said Sacris.

Hafro had not noticed that peasants had gathered around them to hear what they were saying.

 ”Oh yes lets” he replied.

Dane, Mira, and Sacris followed Hafro into the keep, through the chambers, past the guards, and into a room with a big rectangular table.  They sat themselves, Dane and Hafro on one side, Mira and Sacris on the other.

“I hear that you are waging war against the orcs.” Said Sacris sternly.

“We are,” answered Hafro

“I would be honored to fight at your side” He replied.

“Then you will fight?” asked Hafro

“Yes, and this meeting is over” Sacris answered.

After Sacris left Mira smiled.

“He’s cute” She said

Dane hesitated after hearing that. He mumbled something that Hafro didn’t hear.

The next day Hafro found Sacris at an inn.

“How did you get around the orcs?” He asked

“That’s…that’s none of your business!” Sacris replied.

Then he stomped off. Hafro went and found his friends. They talked about Sacris and the orcs.

“THE ORCS ARE BACK!!” Yelled a scout

Soldiers started running to the walls and gates. There were tons more orcs this time!

“Oh great, lots more or every thing against us.” Dane said

“You were expecting less?” Asked Sacris

“CHARGE” cried the orc leader

The orcs started racing at the castle. Siege towers dropped their drawbridges on the wall and orcs flowed onto the wall walks. And the fight was on! Soon the gates flung open and orcs and trolls rushed in and fought there as well. Hafro, Dane, Sacris, and Mira had been fighting for quite a while now. Then a drawbridge dropped and the orcs separated the four. Dane and Sacris on one side and Hafro and Mira on the other.

“NO” Cried Hafro

About 30 hours later the orcs gave up and got back in there ships and left. Hafro and Mira found Sacris standing alone looking at the ground they looked with him and couldn’t believe what they saw. It was Dane, dead! He had three arrows in him, two stab marks and a spear in him. Dane was buried that day. Even the King came to his funeral. After that the kingdom had a victory celebration.
